A Cost-Effective Solution
A pergola can be designed and built for approximately half or one third of the cost of a roofed structure such as a patio or verandah due to not requiring a roof, stormwater connection, less wind loads to consider for the stability, and in many cases will not require a building permit.
An open-roofed pergola cannot easily be covered with a roof, here’s why…
Although it may seem straight-forward and tempting to close the roof of a pergola, it is far from being straight-forward. A building permit will be required for the conversion which will require Engineering calculations due to additional wind loads and drawings. Given the complications, it would be advisable to demolish the existing structure and start fresh.
Please note that it is illegal to cover the roof of an existing pergola without obtaining a building permit, so we urge our customers to discuss such plans with us before making any decisions.
